Emerging out of South London, Croydon is definitely an exciting, alternative hip-hop artist GTsolo. GT standing for “Great Talent” complements him well as the Croydon resident has been praised repeatedly for
his unique creation and sound of music not only as a lyricist but also a producer. Alongside Dwayne Simpson, GT is also a founder of YehBwoy, an entertainment brand that aims to achieve art excellence through music, visual representation and clothing.
Raised in Thornton Heath, (Home to the Stormzy, and duo Krept & Konan) during his early days of music, he regularly attended radio sets crafting his skills within the Grime genre, attending sets on stations such as at Axe Fm, Freeze Fm, Mixing radio and OnTop Fm.
Having released a successful run of Mix-tapes between 2008 and 2011, (Tape Pack vol.1, Perfect Blend, Grinding Sessions) GT has embarked on numerous performances including many of London’s most prominent nightclubs (Oceania, Aura, Tiger Tiger, Plan B, & Liquid, Sound, PentHouse).
Much of GT’s lyrical content derives from personal and life experiences, tackling social issues is an angle in which he believes to be of high importance. In relation to his musical style & personal beliefs, GT has also performed in several Universities/schools (LSE, Kingston, South Bank) and charity events such as Macmillan Cancer support, ACLT and various AntiGun crime campaigns.
Aside from being a lyricist, GT has also delved into acting, performing at a young age at his local theatre (Croydon’s Fairfield Halls), participating in the British film ‘Goldfish Memoirs’. Other acting attributes include filming and directing in a first light film production entitled ‘Assassination Moonwalker’ and more recently making a cameo in the UK smash hit ‘Street Dance 3D’ and Noel Clark’s Brotherhood.
The release of GT’s third Mixtape (Grinding Sessions), caught the Godfather of Grime’s (Wiley) attention prompting a call up to be selected for ‘Wiley’s Elusive UK Tour’ in 2011. The sold out tour played out in various cities across the UK including the 02 Academy in London, Islington. The Grinding Sessions Mixtape also granted GT a OMA nomination for‘Best Newcomer’ in 2011 along with considerable underground radio play (Rinse FM, DejaVu, Westside Radio) and cable network television rotation (Channel U).
2013 saw the arrival of GT’s clothing & brand website (YehBwoy.com) whilst also the 1st of a 2 part EP series entitled ‘DayDreaming’. The response to GT’s 1st DayDreaming EP was well received gaining great reviews and features on the most prominent emerging music sites (MTV WrapUp, SBTV, LinkUp TV, Pardon My Blog) The EP also saw GT embark on his first London Tour which included opening for UK r’n’b singer Angel and performances at 02’s inc club.
In 2014, GT released the follow up to the 1st DayDreaming EP (DayDreaming 2) which was released in conjunction with Sian Anderson’s Sigh-tracked roster. The debut single ‘Near U’ gained considerable coverage on Channel AKA and Flava TV. Its positive message combined with an ‘Oldskool’ Hip-hop ambiance allowed it to easily standout earning GT a nomination for best Hip-hop at the 2014 UEAwards. The follow up release Word Of Mouth Remix also gained considerable TV rotation on Flava TV as well as radio airplay on rinse FM and Déjà vu fm.
In 2015, alongside YehBwoy co-founder Dwayne Simpson, GT decided to expand the YehBwoy roster to include other talented individuals both musicians and those involved within the business side of music incorporating video production. Not only showcasing individual talent, GT has also begun to use his skills in artist development and also directing. Currently working on an untitled EP scheduled for early 2016, alongside the development of several YehBwoy artists; expect to see multiple avenues featuring GT as the young musician continues to grow and cement himself as a household name within the UK music scene.
